Liatris scariosa, commonly known as the prairie blowout grass or gayfeather, is categorized as a perennial plant. Perennials are characterized by their ability to live for more than two years, typically blooming and creating new growth each season. This particular species can thrive in a variety of soil types and has a notable flowering period that contributes to its appeal in gardens and natural settings.

Perennials like Liatris scariosa play an essential role in ecosystems, providing food and habitat for wildlife while also contributing to the aesthetic appeal of landscapes. Their ability to come back each year allows for sustained growth and flowering, which can help in attracting pollinators such as butterflies and bees to the garden. This makes Liatris scariosa a valuable addition to many planting schemes, particularly in native or drought-tolerant gardens.
